Gateway company is a hardware manufacturer and an Acer subsidiary, as it was bought by it in 2007. However, Acer guys are smart enough to realize that Gateway computers have their share of the market and their long time customers, so there was no use in absorbing it and disolving it, thus transforming all Gateway products into Acer products, because this way they would have competed against themselves, losing the Gateway share of the market.
So the result was that Gateway still has its brand name and still manufactures Gateway products, but it only belongs to the Acer group. Gateway’s headquarters are situated in Irvine, California, USA, so this company is 100% American. Most products are manufactured here, but Gateway is a system manufacture, so it’s only natural to buy the necessary components from other producers.
For example all Gateway laptops can’t work without their major component, the processor. But of course processors are not manufactured by Gateway. However, Gateway has shown a long time collaboration with Intel and AMD when it comes to processors and also chose other reliable manufacturers for all the laptop components they use inside the Gateway laptop systems because they have a reputation to protect and they can’t afford using low quality components for its products.
Some time ago Gateway was proud to declare that it was a company that was totally North American based, with no components bought from abroad that they would use in manufacturing their laptops or desktops. However, things have changed a bit since they were bought by Acer, a bigger company, but whose origins are in Taiwan.
As you can imagine, all the tiny laptop and computer components that are namufactured in Asia are a lot cheaper than the ones manufactured in America, so there is a significant decrease of the cost and this reflects in the products price. This explains how Gateway have made a reputation of offering good quality products for affordable prices.
Apart from the company’s headquarters , most of Gateway laptop manufacture has taken place in Nashville, Tennessee, where they have opened Gateway Configuration Center in September 2006. But after they have been taken over by Acer, they did not make any statements about some other places where they manufacture the Gateway laptops and desktops, but uddenly some of these products were noticed to have some labels with “Made in China” or even “Made in Mexico” on their backs.
So I guess they also opened work points there because it’s cheaper to assemble all the components in these countries. In fact I think these places were already owned by Acer. But the most important thing is that Gateway products keep their quality, no matter where they are assembled and packed.
After all in the computer industry you can’t manufacture all the components because it would take a lot of technology and there are already companies whop are specialized in a certain component and they are doing a great job like that. And if you want to have the best products you must purchase the best components.1
